About the Partner Organisation
The Papua New Guinea Institute of Medical Research (PNGIMR) is the country’s leading public health and medical research institution, dedicated to studying the causes, consequences, and prevention of major health issues affecting PNG. Established as a statutory body in 1968, PNGIMR plays a critical role in informing health policies, programs, and services through its research, which has had both national and global impact.
PNGIMR operates under a Corporate Plan and a ten-year Research Agenda, focusing on infectious diseases, maternal and child health, and emerging health challenges. Its headquarters is in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province, where administrative operations and the majority of research activities are based. Other research sites include Madang, Port Moresby, Maprik (East Sepik), and Kokopo (East New Britain), with staff working on vector-borne diseases, epidemiology, and clinical research. With over 400 employees, PNGIMR remains a cornerstone of medical research in the southwestern Pacific, supporting evidence-based improvements to health services in PNG and beyond.
PNGIMR lacks the specialized expertise and staff capacity to develop tailored databases, automated workflows, and IT solutions within the Microsoft environment. While the Institute has made progress in adopting digital tools, there is a critical need for technical support in database development, workflow automation, and IT training to enhance administrative efficiency.
A volunteer will help bridge this skills gap by designing cost-effective digital solutions, building staff capacity in data management, and supporting PNGIMR’s transition to a more automated and paperless system. Their expertise will ensure sustainable improvements in administrative workflows, enabling researchers and staff to focus on high-impact medical research and public health initiatives.
