About the Partner Organisation
Centro Audiovisual Max Stahl Timor Leste (CAMSTL) - is a national non-government organisation, established by the late Max Stahl (who filmed the Santa Cruz Massacre in 1991) in 2003. CAMSTL is Timor’s only Audiovisual Archive. The online archive, password protected for copyright reasons, contains over 10,000 hours of video material and grows around 400 hours each year. The archive’s mission is to collate and preserve the audiovisual history of the Timorese struggle for independence and to, concomitantly, document the ‘Birth of the Nation’ and to make these resources of history, culture, patrimony, and memory available for the people of Timor-Leste, and to use these resources for education, research, and other benefits. CAMSTL was recognized by UNESCO as a ‘Memory of the World’ in 2014. UNESCO recognizes Timor-Leste as the first nation in history to achieve its independence through the power of audio-visual imagery. The value of the collection is also recognized by the University of Coimbra, Portugal, and the National Audiovisual Archive in Paris, France (the largest audiovisual archive in the world), each of these globally known institutions holds copies of large portions of the CAMSTL archive collection.
