We’re looking for a Librarian specialising in cataloguing and website content who can live and volunteer for 12 months in Vanuatu


  • This assignment seeks to develop the library database and cataloguing system to be accessible by network to government departments, provincial offices and general public, and to train the new librarian in updating the catalogue with new accessions, and to strengthen the National Library functions to continue expanding repository information on Vanuatu and the Pacific Region
  • To be considered for this role, you’ll need to be an experienced librarian with cataloguing skills, ability to work with diverse and multicultural communities, and creative ability to develop and manage content for the NLV website, and ability to work with collegiality and understanding with Library staff
  • You will be working with a small but dedicated team of librarians lead by the National Librarian.  


About the Partner Organisation 

The Vanuatu Cultural Centre (VKS) is government entity as an umbrella organization which works to preserve, protect, and promote the various aspect of the culture of Vanuatu. The National Library of Vanuatu working within VKS with its own board of management that oversees its operation. They sit under the Ministry of Justice and Community Services. It houses two special collections, Vanuatu, and Pacific Collections. The Vanuatu Collection provides materials about Vanuatu in English, French and the national language, Bislama, as well as the vernacular languages of Vanuatu. The Pacific Collection contains materials about the rest of the Pacific, mission histories, oral traditions, cultural historical and political records, journals, newspapers, and periodicals published in or about Vanuatu and the wider Pacific region.


The mission is to collect and preserve all literature pertaining to and published about Vanuatu and the Pacific; to encourage and develop public interest in the Collections; to provide, maintain and enhance public access to the Collections, for the purpose of reference, research and general enjoyment of the national literary heritage, and act as a specialised information service and educational center. A volunteer with the right skills to engage staff training and lead the team to address the massive backlog in cataloguing and provide content for a re-launched website. These skills set is not readily available in Vanuatu.

Requirements

  • All applicants must be Australian citizens or holders of Permanent Residency Visa of Australia, or New Zealand residents in Australia with a Special Category Visa (SCV). 
  • A National Police Check must be completed during the application process.  
  • A Psychological Test is required for all volunteer assignments.
