About the Partner Organisation
Vila Central Hospital serves as Vanuatu’s primary referral hospital, and is the site of the majority of paediatric inpatient admissions and tertiary care. Staff from this hospital also have responsibilities to contribute to programs to improve care across the country, as well as facilitate patient transfer to other countries to access services which are not available locally. The hospital aims to provide quality curative and preventative care to all patients, despite constraint human and physical resources.
Vanuatu has a population of 330,000 people, with children, aged 0-18, comprising about 44% of the population - the majority of whom reside in the nation’s capital. While there has been considerable improvements in child health over the last two decades, the infant and child mortality rate in Vanuatu remains high, at 31 per 1,000 live births. Given this, maternal child health has been nominated by the Vanuatu Ministry of Health as a priority area for health system strengthening.
